How can I help my child’s mental health?
Some of us are hunting for some resources for 0-30s well-being, while others of us desperately need help. If you are worried and in the UK, then YoungMinds offers free confidential online and telephone support to anyone worried about the emotional and mental wellbeing of a child or young person up to the age of 25.
Call the free parents' helpline on 0808 802 5544 from 9.30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday; or email [email protected] and YoungMinds will respond to your query within 3 working days. The charity also has information for parents and carers about mental health.
We are not counselors, but we share resources and skills and offer prayer and coaching.
Ruth and I know people involved in creating resources, so I thought it's time to tell you about them
• First, Reuben, who lived with us, was at the time part of recording a well-being series and launched beheadstrong.uk this year.
• Our daughter Alex works for Youthscape which has some great resources.
• Finally, Sara Hargreaves, who was in St Matthew's, Luton where I was vicar for a while, felt the Lord lead her to write a book for children's well-being.
More about the resources.
During a retreat in November 2019, Sara felt prodded by God to create a resource for families around Jesus and our emotions. It felt reasonably important, but also slightly irrelevant. Sara noted her ideas, tried to forget about them, then lockdown emerged. She then produced Jesus & Emotions - click there for the shop. I really like this book, it is one of very few that is aimed at children from a Christian perspective.
Family friend Reuben worked with Dr. Kate Middleton on producing the website beheadstrong.uk. He says, "Headstrong is a new online space aimed only at young people with a focus on promoting positive mental wellbeing. On our website, you will find content for young people written by young people and healthcare professionals and youth workers. We have many new things coming soon, so keep an eye on our website!"
Youthscape also has some other courses like Created which is the art one and Thrive which is developed for schools, which you can purchase from the Youthscape store
I hope there are some things there that you can share with others. But I wonder, What resources have you found helpful?
